DIY Shiplap 'FARM' Sign
Right before I had Liam and for a few months after I had Liam, I had taken a break from making anything or being crafty or creative, like at all. I was just too exhausted! But my hands were CRAVING to make something other than a baby bottle. 😉
I love shiplap but my hubby - not so much. I keep trying to warm him up to the idea of shiplap and it's a good fail every time. I think he's worried about the commitment to it on the wall. He's more practical about that than I am, I suppose. Like why does he have to be such a buzz kill. (Kidding, kind of.) 😊
So I decided to create a little sign with some DIY shiplap to keep me content - for now. It was so easy peasy, I was able to do it during Liam's naptime. Here's your list of supplies:
1. A piece of plywood
2. 2 thin wood boards
3. A mix of letters
4. Wood GlueÂ
5. Small nails
6. White paint
I had purchased all my letters from Michael's Craft Store when they had their "Alphabet Soup" going on in the summer. I'm not sure if they still have that or will do it again, but I know they have a random mix of letters in different shapes, sizes, textures and styles right now!  (I almost purchased some to spell "LAKE" for Liam's nursery.)Â
Once you have gathered your letters to spell your word, you need to place it out on your plywood board to see how large you need your board to be. (Helpful Tip: Lowe's & Home Depot both carry plywood boards that are pre cut into square shapes. They are good size for this project as well!)
Once you cut or have your local home improvement store cut your board to the size you need, it's time to purchase your thin boards. (Side Note: I am terrible with wood sizes and name's, so bare with me and my super technical terms. 😉) You shouldn't need more than 2 boards for this project. I only used one for myself.Â
My boards were previously cut for a different project that I ended up not continuing. (Surprise, surprise!) So they were in all different lengths so I choose to be a little more rustic in the way I arranged them! I placed them on top of my wood board in the arrangement I was pleased with. (If they were not already cut, I would have kept them all the same length and more uniform.) I then took wood glue and applied a generous amount on the back of my thin wood piece and pushed it back onto my plywood. I continued this with all of my pieces. I didn't have any wood clamps so I grabbed my heaviest college books I had and laid it on top of my "shiplap" for over night. (Hey, I know now why those books were so expensive - who knew they were tools too?!)Â
After letting my glue dry for 24 hours, I painted all of my boards white. (You could distress your boards at this time too!) Once the paint was dry, I was in the final stretch!
Time to attach the letters! Now - some of my letters didn't have a way to hang them so I put wood glue on them and used my handy book tools to apply pressure and keep them attached to the boards. And it did work! For my other letters that did have an attachment piece on the back to hang, I hammered in a tiny nail and hung my letter.
Voila friends! Completed! So easy right? And so cute too in my opinion! 😉 If I create another I might try to be a tad more fancy and add a border around the edge to look more like a picture frame. Some other cute words could be - HOME, BARN, BAKERY, PIES...the list is truly endless!
Thanks so much for popping over here to see this fun, simple DIY project! If you make one- promise to tag me on Insta so I can see yours?? See ya later dear friends!Â
